Goodbye to a great

A very classy, talented man. Look at all that bling!

I didn't mean the title to sound funerary, and I'm really behind I know, but Joe Sakic retired, and that makes me really sad. He was my favorite player in the league, but he left the game on his own terms. Mr. Sakic didn't strike me as the type to hang around forever, and when he felt he could no longer play the way he wanted to, he hung 'em up. I respect that, but I'm still sad as I wanted to see him wear the red and white in 2010 in his hometown. Hats off to you, Joe. I hope whatever you occupy your time with is fun and you don't have second thoughts. Maybe you can follow in Yzerman's footsteps?

I know you just did this whole voting thing...

but IT'S ALL-STAR voting time! I love to vote for the All-Star games. I don't usually actually watch the games, but I like to vote for my favorite players.
The Wild have Gaborik, Burns, Koivu, and Backstrom on the ballot this year. I recommend voting for the last three, and Gaborik if you are one of those poor misguided 8 year olds who always seem to have his sweater at the X.

Obviously if Sakic gets better you should vote for him, as well as Gagner, Toews, Oilers in general, Latandresse, Price, St. Louis, you know, awesome dudes like those.

I'm not gonna lie, I was a little confused at first, but here's where to go if you want to vote.

Mikko is in third place for forwards in the west, and the Habs are basically owning the east. Sweet.

Tucker is a douche

There's a little karma for you

Wow. I had to check up on the Avs game because as you all know, Joe Sakic is a LoLaH favorite. Instead of reading about how godly Mr. Sakic is, I get to read about how douchey Darcy Tucker is. I hate it that players like Tucker, Avery, and (as much as I hate to admit it sometimes) Raffi Torres take away from the game. They take away from its beauty with their crap. Cheap shots and disrespect. It's one thing to trash talk, but it's another to make threats and purposefully hurt people. That's not only disrepectful to the game, it's disrespectful to fellow men.

Tonight we play the Canucks. They have Willie Mitchell who used to be awesome, but now not so much. He's another one *coughParrishcough* that we maybe should have kept around. Shut up, he was awesome back in the day, ok? He couldn't fight, but whatever. He was still awesome. Alix will probably say a few words about the game, and I have several other Canucks bloggers on the blog roll. Check 'em out.

Quick Round up

A few awesome things and a couple of not so awesome things have happened in the blogosphere lately. I'll start with the not so awesome so as to end on a good note.

James Mirtle is handing in the keys to his blog to work on a new project. Sad day as he was (is) one of the greatest.

An Oilers blogger was kicked out of a game for live blogging during the game. This is explained in more detail over at Covered in Oil, and one of the writers is leaving. We'll miss you, buddy.

In other news, Elise has shown her brilliance once again in my favorite thing in the blogosphere, Tale of the Tape. Go over and check it out!

RudyKelly of the Battle of California made fun of the Avs goaltenders and caused them to lose the game. Note to self, do not make fun of the Avs goaltenders. Though he does speak works of truth when he points out that Mr. Sakic probably really hates their goalies.

FCP Part 2?

I've complained enough about this on other people's blogs/cell phones, so it's probably time that I dug out my computer and wrote about it. The Oilers traded Greene and Stoll for Visnovsky, and I'm not pleased. Bro said that Edmonton was not on his list of places to go, and after having FCP bail and screw the team over, I'm extremely wary. Also, I really liked Stoll and Greene. I'm less upset about the acquisition of Brule. 1.) his name is fun to say, 2.) he seems like solid player. Cole I'm kind of indifferent to. The new owner Katz is aggressive indeed. He wants the best team NOW.

The fact that Bruno has been acquired makes me extremely happy. Shepp better start to pick a new number, because I don't know that the Wild faithful would allow him to survive if he didn't give up number 15 to Bruno.

Joe Sakic has not yet made a decision, but I say he should take his time. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

The rest of the trades have been very well analyzed over at TSN, and I won't pretend like I'm as cool as Bob McKenzie. He has a couple of great articles up, and TSN has provided analysis on all the trades and stuff. I'm too tired to post about all of it (this stupid internship is killing me), so I just decided to write a small blurb for now where people can yell at me back for completely trashing the Edmonton/LA trade. A crapload has happened in the past few days, and I'm sure I'll make a better post about it, just not for a bit.

Completely Unreasonable Summer Wishlist

I will post a real wishlist that is actually feasible later. For now this is just what I'd REALLY like to see. None of this money saving, team chemistry crap.

1.) Vincent Lecavalier and Joe Thornton. I should be the GM of the Rangers. We need centers.

2.) A younger Martin Brodeur, though I could do without the personal scandals and douchebaggery.

3.) Joe Sakic. Duh. What wishlist of mine would be complete without his name?

4.) Andrew Brunette, because this is a fake wishlist, and I don't want to tear him away from his good fit in Colorado. I am glad to see he has found his niche, especially because I don't think he is really a good fit for this team any longer.

5.) Matt Niskanen. He won't be allowed to leave the Stars of his own free will for quite some time, but whatever. Too bad the Wild aren't like the old school Montreal Canadiens...they always got their man.

6.) While we are on the subject of defensemen, a young Nicklas Lidstrom would be nice.

7.) A hardworking Marian Gaborik. I can dream, right?

8.) Scott Niedermayer when he still cared about hockey...because you can never have too many Norris nominated defensemen on your team. (But you might still make a first round exit anyway, that's what Vinny and Joe are there for.)

9.) Scotty Bowman as the coach. Jacques Lemaire is a good coach, but there is no better coach in all of hockey than Scotty Bowman.

Twins Update: I watched an entire game last night. With his hat on, Nick Blackburn looks an awful lot like Joe Mauer. Justin Morneau made an outfielder look stupid, and Joe Mauer still looks funny when he runs. That is all. Oh yeah one more thing, KEVIN SLOWEY START ON THURSDAY!

A letter to a Hockey God

Dear Joe Sakic,

Please, please, please don't retire. I want to be able to see you play one more time, and I don't want to see you end your career on an 8-2 loss kind of a note. You are my favorite player that ever will be, but I also don't want you to play longer than you want to. I hope you discuss this with your family, step back for a few weeks, go on vacation or something. I know you will not pull a Scott Niedermayer. You battled back from a tough injury, and I got scared. I thought that this would really get thoughts of retirement going in your head, since before you were coming off a 100 point season. Please remember that you came back from the injury and led your struggling team to the playoffs like Moses to the promised land, and continued your playoff studliness. I know you have one more year in you, but Wayne Gretzky said that the best time to retire is when people think you could/should have played one more season. I wish you the best with whatever you decide, and I hope to see you out destroying my team next year. Preferably when I'm home to watch.

P.S. I figured out why my pleas to the Hockey Gods didn't work, it's because you are one of the Hockey Gods and had a vested interest in the decision. It's too bad you played on a team with Forsberg and Smyth who have angered the rest of the Hockey Gods, or you might have been able to go a bit farther.

I hate the Flames part 7

So everything was looking really good for a while in the game. Pouliot finally did something useful and scored a pair of goals. It all went downhill from there. Iginla had a hat trick, I fould out that Calgary has ice girls (causing me to lose respect for them), and Lombardi scored a goal at the very end of the game because Sean Hill is a bum. Johnsson had 2, count 'em TWO, goals last night. Final score: 5-4 Shames. We lost our three point lead over them obviously, which is bad since they have a game in hand.

In other news, the Oilers beat the Avs 7-5 yesterday, with my boy Sam Gagner getting a pair of goals and earning the first star of the game. Sadly Joe Sakic did not get a goal, but was named the third star of the game. AWESOME. Oilers are still rollin' and are now three points behind the Avs...I bet HF is ready to explode right about now.

Habs beat the Bruins 3-2 in a SO to complete their series sweep of the B's. Way to go Habs!

Right now I'm watching the Twins game, and Bert is wearing rabbit ears. How cool is that? Liriano is starting, but he's not looking as good as I would have hoped. Maybe he just needs a season to get his mojo back? Joe Mauer just threw someone out at second base, and Dick sounds quite amazed to have seen happen. BUUUUURN. They are playing Baltimore, btw.

The Kings beat the Stars 4-2, which is useful to the Wild, because it means that Minnesota is catching up to them in points.

The Leafs beat the Sens 5-4, even though last I heard the Sens were killing the Leafs.

A Win in Regulation!!!

WHOOOOOO! The Wild beat the Avs 3-1 on Monday. It's a good day in the neighborhood. Goals from Burns, Radio, and Veilleux completed this game, and Sakic got a goal for Colorado. I was hoping it would be his only goal, since I didn't want everyone in Minnesota to hate me.

Last night I watched a little bit of the Oilers game, but not too much, cause I wanted to save some bandwidth to watch Joe Thornton the Wild game tonight. It was probably a good choice from an academic standpoint, because instead I went to the library and read through a stack of academic journals to research for my chem presentation that's coming due. From a karmic standpoint, it was CLEARLY a good choice as the Oilers won 8-4 over the Yotes. The Oilers are rolling, and I fully support their playoff push, especially if it kicks Vancouver out.

Tonight: Wild @ San Jose 9:30 PM CDT on FSN. (Whoo! A game at a time that I can actually watch!) San Jose's roll got killed by the Oilers, and I'm hoping that means good things for the Wild. We need each and every point that we can get right now.

On a Personal Note

I try to keep this blog all about sports, but right now I seem incapable of making my own decisions, so here goes.

• I'm entering several March Madness pools. Anyone have any idea of who's going to win? Any strategies that you can share?
• Does anyone know if Spanish or Chinese would be more useful to an environmental science major?
• How about French? I speak it fluently and write it pretty well. Maybe I should not take French in favor of Geographical Information Systems?

Next game: So the Wild are playing a lot of division rivals until the end of the season. Colorado is surging, and I'm hoping the Wild can slow them down. Many players have returned from injury for them, including my favorite player alive: JOE SAKIC. I announced today on my friend's sports show that I have a man crush on Sakic, and he responded with, "but you're a girl..." in a very confused voice. Yes, Dillon, I'm not gender confused, I just mean that he's old enough to be my dad/is married, so it's not that kind of crush. It's just a huge one on his wrist shot/captaining skills/awesomeness in general, so therefore it's the typical mancrush. (or what I would define as a mancrush) I'm going to be done making the Avs feel good about themselves now, and hope for a win tomorrow night at 6CDT on VERSUS! OMG, I just realized it's on Versus! I have to go and reserve the TV now.

Have I Mentioned Lately Just How Much I Loathe the Flames?

I needed to vent some rage..

Because I do. A lot. Today's 2-1 loss was horrible. The game might have turned out differently if the stupid ref hadn't waived off that goal. I was watching the game while attempting to be productive, but that didn't go too well for me. The Shames are now on top of the division...but we play a string of crappy Southeast teams coming up, so I'm hoping that will help us out. I have no idea who Calgary and Vancouver are playing coming up, but I hope they are good teams.

Mark Parrish scored on a feed from Mikko Koivu, proving why his office is right in front of the net for a reason. The Flames had goals by Conroy and Langkow.

JOE SAKIC IS SUPPOSED TO PLAY TONIGHT! I'm so torn, it's the Oilers, so I want them to win, but I want Sakic to get a goal or something.

Up Next: the Caps...um, I don't really have a lot to say about them except for that we had better win! I must admit, I know they've been fairly decent for them, but I don't much beyond that. Go to A View From the Cheap Seats if you want to actually learn about them.

Oh yeah and Nick Schultz signed for six more years. Now it's only a decision between Rolston, Bouchard, and Demitra for this offseason.

Ugh. I missed most of the Canucks game yesterday, but Elise informed me that I didn't miss much. I watched part of the Chicago game tonight, and I have to say, I'm pretty pissed that we lost to the Blackhawks. We have an excellent record against them, partially helped by the fact that they have really sucked in recent years. This is a much improved version of the Blackhawks, but a 3-0 loss is unacceptable. Especially since goaltending was the one area that I am actually owning this week in fantasy hockey. Step it up! I expect you guys to be better than this! You are leading the division in an extremely tough division, holding onto that lead will require some effort! PLAYOFF HUNT! Do those words mean anything? They had better, because when I get home in May, there will be hell to pay if there is no Wild hockey for me to watch.

Now then, on to happier things.
Congrats to Mark Parrish and his wife on the birth of their daughter!
Did anyone see the Habs game yesterday? It was totally sick. They came back from a five goal deficit to win. That's the largest comeback in all of the Habs' storied history. I was SUPER stoked that I chose to spend a little of my precious bandwidth watching them beat the icky Rangers.
Joe Sakic had his first full practice today! I'm so excited for him to come back.
I got an amazing holiday card in the mail today from my HLOG sister Tracy. It has a GIANT Joe Sakic trading card on the cover and shiny, silver stars. I love it! Thanks, Tracy!

Up Next: Calgary. I really dislike Calgary, but they have a couple of awesome fans in HG and Leanne over at Double d(ion) and Open.Ice. Hits., respectively. We need to beat them! This is one of the teams that is creeping up on us in the standings, and we've had trouble against them all season. Someone needs to be assigned to Iginla...hit, kill! Something, anything.

My Bad, Wild Fans

So I'm feeling responsible for the Oilers' win last night. I totally heaped warm fuzzies on them, encouraged them, and reminded them that they have steamrolled teams in the past. Oops, my bad. I promise, I won't ever do that again...until next game when I'm torn again. It was a nice 4-2 win if you are an Oilers fan, or Coach MacTavish. He seems particularly pleased about the win. Note: if you are going to bash MacT, do it somewhere else. The Wild Boards have a whole thread about bashing him, but I like MacT, so I will not tolerate abuse of him here.

I do have one beef, and that is with Jarret Stoll. He has ten goals on the season and probably half of them are against the Wild. Why, Jarret, why? After you were so nice to me after my surgery, you turn around and do this? Not cool, dude. Brodziak, you too. You and I are SO no longer friends. I was ok with you getting one goal since you did a good celebration, but two...not so much. I can't get away with cheering for you when you are getting two goals against my number one team. Fernando Pisani, I'm happy you're healthy now and able to erm, keep your issues under control, but not happy enough to allow you crappy (sorry, I won't use that word around you again) first goals.

It is extremely hard for me to cheer against the Oilers. I have gotten super attached to these guys, even some of the new additions such as Gagner. Cogliano...not so much, even Matt Greene has grown on me. Penner too. Speaking of which, everyone should check out the Penner/Greene video if they haven't already. It's up on YouTube. Part 1 is much better than part 2.

Parrish had another rough night of getting his butt kicked and not scoring a goal that he deserved. Poor guy. He's had a tough last couple of weeks. Demitra and Rolston had the goals for the Wild

Backstrom was pulled in favor of Harding, and in my opinion that did nothing. If anything it hurt the team. Backstrom had played pretty well, and Harding was just thrown in, and did not play particularly well. Especially against Brodziak...

Up Next: Vancouver Canaucks. Willie Mitchell is rumored to be back, and the game will be on at a time that I actually might be able to watch. 9 PM CT on KSTC.

All-Star Randomness

I watched the entire All-Star game, but I'm just going to give one of my usual random game reviews on it.

Rick Nash had hat trick! He looked so happy, how did he not become the MVP of the game? It worked for Sakic in 2004.

Joe Thornton kind of looked at the camera and then went back to hearing his name announced. No smile, nothing, just kind of a curious look.

I got my hockey hating RA from Kansas to watch the first period of the game with me.

For an All-Star game it was pretty exciting. The West coming back to lead for .5 seconds was awesome, but the fact that the East won in the last 20 seconds was much less awesome.

There were some random dudes who came in and demanded that I explain hockey to them when I was trying to pay attention to things like interviews...or you know the game. For self-proclaimed sports buffs, they are really clueless.

Scott "I am really not a team player" Niedermayer had a goal. I started to be happy, then checked myself.

I missed seeing Joe Sakic at the All-Star game. I voted every day for him faithfully until they announced that he would be out for three months. This whole injury thing is making me a sad panda.

Super Skills-unfortunately I didn't get to watch the Super Skills competition as I was in and out all day taking care of things that I really should have been doing all week. I hear Marian Gaborik got cheated in the shootout creativity contest, and that Pronger fell on his face. Gaborik is on my list of people that should watch themselves for his disinterest in re-signing with Minnesota, and Pronger, well we all know how I feel about FCP.

Tomorrow: we play the Ducks at the Xcel Energy Center at 6 CST. (That's 4 PST to you Ducks fans/Minnesotans stuck on the West Coast.) Like always, it should be a good game. I'm a bit swamped right now, but since I don't have class on Thursdays, I will possibly write a real post then.

**EDIT** Go over and see Earl Sleek at Battle of California and read his Wild/Ducks gameday post. I don't like the actual prediction for tonight's game, but read the rest of what he has to say because he talks about karma and how we are due. It's an excellent post overall.

Boo, Shames!

That game blew chunks. Massive ones the size of Joe Thornton's butt. The Wild even played decently against the Flames, something they seem to only rarely do (especially in the Saddledome). Usually the Wild are stellar on the second game of back to back games, but noooooo. Iginla was held scoreless, but sadly his teammates were not. Rolston has continued his now two game goal streak to get the media and a few fans off his back. Parrish didn't play because of a Salo shot to the foot (not broken), and Harding was solid. Burns had a goal that got reviewed and called off, and I had a heart attack when the school cut me off for using too much internet. That's pretty much all the game summary that I feel like writing.

Around the Blogosphere: I have been reading some new blogs lately, ones written by fans of teams that I usually hate quite a lot, but these blogs are fun and well written, and they make me feel badly about hating on their teams...until we play said teams. The Untypical Girls (Dallas) have switched to wordpress, the Humming Giraffe (Van) has the greatest picture of wildlife that I will ever see, and two of my HLOG sisters have created a NYR blog, Some Like it Blue. If you are procrastinating for any reason ( I don't judge, until this semester I procrastinated regularly), then you should check these and the many other quality blogs on my blogroll out. Next game: The Colorado Avalanche on Thursday at 8 CST on KSTC. I'm bumming that Joe Sakic is out, because he is one of the main reasons that I enjoy Wild/Avs games so much. The Avs have suffered a lot of injuries lately, and have been in a bit of a slide because of it. Hopefully the boys will be all ready to go after coming off that tough loss to Calgary. This will be the last Wild game before the All-Star break, then they have a few days off before facing the Ducks. (ew)

Catching up on the last week

It's mid-term time at Willamette, so I've been extremely swamped lately.

Last week we played Anaheim and won 2-0, extending our winning streak longer than any other team in the league. (I don't know if it was longer in terms of games, but longer in terms of time.) Josh Harding turned a few heads by proving to Anaheim that he exists, and that he's good. Not so surprising now that I picked him for my team, is it?

Then we played the LA Kings on Tuesday, and we lost 4-3, in a shoot out. How stupid is that? Whatever, we came back to win yesterday against the St. Louis Blues. Wild's record is now 6-1, and they play division rival Colorado tonight (finally, some teams in our division). Technically the game is on right now...but I'm studying for my world geography exam and writing a French essay, so I probably won't be turning the game on for a bit yet.

He's still amazing and godly even while playing my team, I'm just not supposed to admit to that fact. I'm pretty sure he won all those trophys by owning my team.

Joe Sakic is in town padding his stats some more, and in one of my fantasy leagues, I have seven players involved in the Wild/Avs game. Sakic is on my team, but I'd like him to not dominate my team like he usually does, because the Avs are right behind us in the division. The big question of the night is, will Andrew Brunette be able to trick Wes Walz into giving him the puck twice? It worked before, but Walz might be a bit more wary this time of the crafty Brunette.

In other bad news, the Wild are going to Calgary on Wednesday to face Jerome Iginla and those other guys. Iginla is second behind Sakic in points scored against the Wild. Good times. Phaneuf should prepare to get owned by Boogaard again if he decides to try anything stupid, and I look forward to Warrener having something entertaining to say. I will also be grilling Courtney to see if her loyalties lie with Minnesota, or Matthew Lombardi, although it's possible that I don't want to know the answer to that.

For those of you that do not read Hot Oil or No Pun Intended regularly, you should check out the Oilers website(and you should also start reading those blogs! Hot Oil is having a Hot-off right now!)...they have the new pictures up. This year is the year of smiling it looks like. Staios is smiling like someone farted, and Jarret Stoll is proving that he still has some teeth left. There are also some awful ones, but I'll let you find that out for yourself.

The Wild can win on the road. An exciting 3-2 road win over the Coyotes has extended the win streak to 4. *knock on wood* I actually got to watch the game tonight, and I sent a very detailed game recap to the people paying for me to watch the game, but since I'm sure those details would kill all of you with boredom, I'll just do a brief recap here.
I had four games up, so randomly I'll mention other games, too.

First Period:
Gaborik got a goal, and then two Coyotes got goals too. Not ok.
I watched Behind the Mask, and Kelly Hrudey was freaking out a little bit. He talked about the young Oilers a little bit, praising their hockey smarts. He and Scott Oake then moved on to the subject of the recent suspensions, and Tootoo came up. Hrudey says that Tootoo is a disgrace to the game, and he feels that Tootoo should not be allowed back on the ice again. He hopes that someday he gets forced out of the game, because he believes that many of his hits are dirty with intent to injure. He was very worked up about this, and even went all Don Cherry on Scott Oake.
Second Period:
Pretty boring period overall. A couple of penalties and a lot of turnovers. The Wild were very much out-skated.
I got bored during intermission, so I flipped to the Avs game and listened to the announcers talk about how amazing and godly Joe Sakic is. Congrats to him on his 15th career hat trick. It's nice to see Sakic getting a bajillion goals on someone else's team for a change. (Ok, so with 614 goals, clearly we are not the only team he has beaten up on over time, but he has the most goals against the Wild of anyone in the NHL.) Avs beat the crap out of Columbus. I tried to watch the Oilers game for a bit, but that didn't go too well for me. Sharks lost 2-1 to Boston. I didn't pay a whole lot of attention to that game.
Third Period:
The second half of the third period is when things started to get good. The Wild lost control of their tight dicipline a little bit, but Mikko Koivu bailed us out by getting a shorthanded goal. Gaborik, yeah Gaborik was in the box for roughing of all things. Clearly he and Hemsky need to learn that they are not tough enough to get into a fight without getting killed. Teammates came and saved him from certain death. Then Belanger got a goal on a nice rebound. Auld went to his right, puck came out to his left and Belanger jammed it in. Couple more penalties at the end of the game, and JL looked pissed about that. Shane Doan completely blindsided Brent Burns who dropped the gloves, but managed not to get a penalty.

Overall the Wild were outworked, and they didn't deserve this win, but obviously I'm glad they won. The dicipline started to slip later in the game, and a couple of players *coughGaborik&Fostercough* took some stupid penalties. Foster really needs to stop shoving people into the goalie.
